Jesus Prays in the Garden of Olives
We adore you, O Christ and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
Reading
He went, as usual, to the Mount of Olives with the disciples following him. When they reached the place, he said to them, “Pray now, that you may be faithful.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, let this cup pass from me; yet not my will but yours be done.” When he rose from prayer, he returned to his disciples but found them sleeping because of their grief.
Response
Hear my prayer, Lord, and let my cry come to you. Do not hide your face from me, for I am in trouble. Listen to my prayer, and answer me quickly when I call.
Prayer
Almighty and eternal God,
You permitted your Son
to be weakened and profaned
so that He might rise from the dead
free from the ravages of sin.
Help us to accept our weaknesses and failings
as forerunners of our glorious resurrection in union with your Son.
Amen.
While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment languish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart.
