Mary and John Stand at the Cross
We adore you, O Christ and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
Reading
Standing near the cross were Mary, his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the beloved disciple standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” From that moment, the disciple took her into his care.
Response
To what can I compare you, O daughter Jerusalem? What example can I show for your comfort, virgin daughter Zion? For great as the sea is your distress; who can heal you?
Prayer
O blessed Lord,
at your passion a sword of sorrow
pierced the loving heart of your mother
as Simeon had foretold.
Grant that we who look back at her sorrows with compassion
might receive the healing fruits of your sufferings.
Amen.
Virgin, in you love befriend me,
At the Judgment Day defend me.
Help me by your constant prayer.
