The University Parish Newman Center is the spiritual home for over 200 students and over 200 local families. We have to call this house our family home. It's a community firmly grounded in faith and deeply committed to the students and to one another. With your generosity, we hope to accomplish the following:
Addition of a NARTHEX & ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM SPACE
Estimate: $455,000
Status: Design phase (DS Architecture, Kent)
Estimated Completion: December 2016
After receiving smart and thoughtful feedback from the parish community in April 2014, the Together We Build committee commissioned a new plan for the expanded and renovated narthex that will not only create a clear, new "front door," but also bring to fruition a dream of Fr. Daum's in the 1960s to build another wing on the north side of the property that will include classroom and meeting space. The new narthex and addition will make our space a true place of Christian hospitality. It will increase wheelchair accessibility with new meeting space that looks onto a new garden next to the chapel and an ADA-compliant restroom; add a dedicated area for baptisms; provide a gathering space for weddings, funerals, and other liturgical celebrations; increase seating for crowded liturgies, such as Ash Wednesday and Easter; and offer a renovated confessional. Most importantly, the Narthex invites the campus IN to the amazing community we call the Newman Center and draws us OUT to the campus and community we serve.
NEW ROOF (Social Hall & Offices)
Cost Estimate: $125,000
Status: COMPLETED Spring 2015!
Our current roof has lasted for 20+ years. Repeated repairs have lengthened its life, but each repair leads to a new leak, causing extensive damage to the interior of the building. The new roof - with a new pitch - will last until 2034, and hopefully longer.
Safety/Compliance
KITCHEN UPGRADES
Cost Estimate: $25,000
Status: COMPLETED Fall 2014!
Anyone who has visited the Newman Center knows that the kitchen is the hub of social gatherings. However, our kitchen was in need of safety and compliance upgrades, specifically our stove, hood, and fire suppression system. We identified items that could be kept which are still in good, working order and safety compliant to keep as many costs as possible at bay. Thanks to an anonymous gift, we now have a new hospitality nook in the social hall for students, staff, parishioners and visitors. This cafe-style corner is warm and inviting and is already well loved by members of the community.
