Fr. Daum, our founding pastor, had a dream. His original plan for the Newman Center included a wing to mirror the one on the south side of the chapel. Over 50 years later, our new narthex and addition of meeting/classroom space on the north side will bring this part of his dream to fruition.
A wide view of the new narthex and addition from the west reveals glass doors that will welcome the campus community into our space. The addition will add balance to the chapel and existing Newman Center offices and social hall.
The expanded narthex will retain and enhance the original, iconic Sacred Heart window, a light by day that shines brightly upon those gathered in our chapel to worship and by night a light that is a beacon of welcome .
The detail of the path leading to our new front door reflects the hospitality that has come to mark this parish community for over 50 years.
The new floorplan will provide for our current and future pastoral needs. A new baptismal font located in the gathering space and on the same axis as the altar symbolizes our entrance into the Christian community. Stained glass windows of the North American saints, which are currently located in the Fireside Lounge, will be relocated to the baptismal area to help us to remember our connection to the Communion of Saints. A movable wall system is being proposed to create an airlock for energy efficiency and to provide overflow seating for the congregation. A renovated confessional and new restroom will enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities. Multipurpose meeting and classroom space with storage will allow us more flexibility in the use of our current space and provide an accessible space for religious education classes for parishioners of all ages. Finally, a new garden will be created in between the chapel and the new wing, providing another serene and beautiful place for prayer.
